The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State is embroiled in a controversy following the alleged nomination of a man as the Women Leader in Isuamawu Ward 4 of Isuikwuato Local Government Area. A 7-man disciplinary committee, led by Goddy Nnorom, revealed the anomaly, further stating that an elderly woman was also nominated as the Youth Leader for the same ward, sparking outrage among the party’s women and youth members.
The disciplinary committee has recommended the suspension of party members implicated in the alleged irregularities and those accused of instigating crises within the PDP.
Referencing a recent Supreme Court judgment that affirmed party membership as an internal affair, the committee stated that it meticulously reviewed numerous infractions in accordance with the 2017 PDP Constitution (as amended).
The party contends that the nominations defied natural order, as there were qualified youths and young women readily available to fill the respective leadership roles.
The recommendations of the Goddy Nnorom-led disciplinary committee explicitly stated:
- “Recognition that the so named infractions violated key sections of the 2017 PDP Constitution (as amended), including sections 58(1)-(a)(b)(d)(e)(g)(i).”
- “Adoption of the penalty as outlined in Section 59(1)(d) of the 2017 PDP Constitution (as amended) in response to the violations.”
This development has ignited internal tensions within the Abia PDP, raising questions about the adherence to party guidelines and the representation of key demographics within its leadership structure. The outcome of the disciplinary process will be closely watched by political observers in the state.
