  • Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has issued a stark warning: Nigeria is “collapsing,” and he’s urging the opposition, starting with the Labour Party (LP), to unite and confront the nation’s governance crisis.
Speaking at the LP’s National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja, Obi painted a grim picture of widespread poverty and hardship. “We must speak when things are wrong,” he declared, citing clear indicators of national decline. “More and more people are poorer. People who used to feed well are now begging.”
Obi stressed the urgency of the situation, calling for collective action to “ensure that the right things, starting from our party, are done.”
The LP meeting, chaired by former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman, followed the recent Supreme Court ruling that invalidated the Court of Appeal’s recognition of Julius Abure as LP National Chairman. Prominent figures, including Obi, his running mate Datti Baba-Ahmed, and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, attended.
Following the meeting, LP leaders marched to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters, demanding recognition of Nenadi Usman as the party’s legitimate chair. They argued that the Supreme Court’s decision affirmed Usman’s position, as the court had ruled that the issue of leadership was an internal affair of a party over which courts lacked jurisdiction, and noted that Abure’s tenure had since expired.
