Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the minister of interior, says the federal government will begin a clampdown on irregular migrants in the country from August 1.
The minister spoke in Abuja on Tuesday during a meeting with the representatives of the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA).
Tunji-Ojo cited a three-month grace period from May 1 to enable the unauthorised migrants to find solutions before the clampdown begins on August 1.
“We hope that people will take advantage of the three-month grace period to regularise and subject themselves to established immigration protocols,” he added.
“We will be very hard on any company that avoids or prevents the NIS from carrying out its legal responsibility, as we will not tolerate that going forward.”
Tunji-Ojo further said there has also been a review of fees to encourage sustainability for certain government businesses.
