Angela Peters, a 56-year-old grandmother of 12 and mother of five from Australia, has captured global attention after welcoming twin baby girls with her 39-year-old Nigerian husband, Bright. The couple’s unique love story and successful IVF journey have since gone viral, inspiring women worldwide.
Speaking to The Sun UK, Angela revealed that she met Bright in 2020 through a dating app, although she had initially been chatting with his older brother, Emeka, who lived in Senegal. Her interest in Bright was sparked after Emeka sent her a family photo.
“It was like a thunderbolt – I knew this was the man I was meant to be with,” she recalled.
At the time, Angela was based in Australia, and Bright was working as a cook in South Africa. After nine months of long-distance communication, she flew to Nigeria in February 2021 to meet Bright in person. Just nine days later, they were married in a modest civil ceremony in Lagos.
“The kids were horrified when I called to tell them, but I knew that once they met Bright, they’d understand,” Angela said.
Having gone through a divorce in 2019 after decades of marriage, Angela was not expecting to become a mother again. But seeing Bright’s longing to be a father sparked a change of heart.
“Raising my kids was the joy of my life, but over the years, I realised I wasn’t happy in my marriage. I longed to be a wife again, but the last thing on my mind was having more babies,” she admitted.
Angela initially told Bright she couldn’t have children due to perimenopause, but he remained optimistic. “He told me not to worry and that one day we’d have twin girls together. I laughed, knowing that was impossible,” she said.
When she discovered that the age limit for IVF in Australia was 52, Angela began exploring options abroad. With no support for surrogacy from her children and having ruled out other alternatives, she considered letting Bright father a child with another woman.
“Luckily, fate had other plans,” she shared.
During a 2023 visit to Nigeria, a friend of Bright’s suggested a local IVF clinic. Despite initial scepticism, Angela was impressed by the quality of care and lack of concern about her age. The clinic arranged for an egg donor and used Bright’s sperm to create embryos. She underwent IVF treatment at 54.
In December 2023, she found out she was pregnant with twins. “It felt like the answer to our prayers, but not everyone saw it that way,” she said, referencing the backlash and health warnings she received.
Her daughters suggested documenting the journey on TikTok, which quickly gained traction. “It was my daughters’ idea to film my pregnancy journey and put it on TikTok – we wanted to inspire other women who dreamed of becoming mums against the odds,” Angela noted.
In August 2024, she gave birth to twin girls, Khorus and Knowyn.
Her 28-year-old daughter, Deina, who once feared Bright might be a scammer, later came to accept the relationship and even supported the couple’s decision to have children.
“I was worried about her being pregnant at 56, but she flew through it and put my mind at rest,” Deina said. “Mum has proved that age isn’t a barrier to following your dreams.”
Angela credits the birth of the twins with bringing her family closer and encouraging other women not to give up on their dreams of motherhood.
“To those who dream of motherhood later in life, don’t lose hope,” she advised.
The couple currently reside in Nigeria, where they are focused on raising their daughters and embracing the joys of family life.
