The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the crucial 2027 elections, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, representing the PDP Governors Forum, has brokered a significant agreement with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The deal, reached during a high-stakes meeting in Lagos, seeks to address the party’s deep-seated internal conflicts and chart a unified path forward.
Sources close to the negotiations reveal that the agreement centers on resolving the contentious political crisis in Rivers State, involving Wike and the suspended Governor Sim Fubara. Crucially, it also tackles the simmering disputes surrounding the South-South zonal leadership and the long-vacant National Secretary position. The core objective: to balance the competing interests within the PDP and prevent further fragmentation.
This intervention comes at a critical juncture for the PDP, which has been grappling with escalating internal strife since the 2023 elections. The Rivers State conflict, coupled with disagreements over key leadership roles, has fueled divisions and triggered defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), notably the recent departure of key figures from Delta State.
Governor Makinde, acting as the PDP Governors Forum’s emissary, engaged in frank discussions with Wike, acknowledging the detrimental impact of the ongoing crisis. Wike, in turn, expressed his dissatisfaction with the Forum’s handling of key issues, emphasizing the need for adherence to party laws and a more inclusive approach.
The agreement reportedly includes a commitment to revisit the Forum’s decisions on the South-South zonal leadership, the Rivers State crisis, and the National Secretary position, with a view to accommodating all stakeholders. Crucially, both parties agreed to pursue political solutions over litigation, signaling a shift towards reconciliation.
This development offers a glimmer of hope for the PDP, which faces an uphill battle to regain its footing ahead of 2027. However, the agreement’s success hinges on its implementation and the willingness of all factions to prioritize party unity over personal ambitions. The coming months will be decisive in determining whether this fragile truce can translate into a revitalized PDP.
