The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, has refuted claims that the party has invited former President Goodluck Jonathan to run for the 2027 presidential race on their platform.
In an interview with BBC Hausa, Abdullahi clarified that the party has not offered its presidential ticket to Jonathan and that reports suggesting otherwise are false.
He stated, “The report that PDP has issued its presidential ticket to former President Goodluck Jonathan or invited him to contest the 2027 presidential election is not true. What happened is this: I had an interview with a journalist where we discussed some issues. But in the course of the interview, he mentioned President Jonathan, asking about our opinion of him, because there are reports that he is being urged to run for the presidency.”
Abdullahi emphasized that while Jonathan is eligible to run for president due to being a Nigerian citizen, the party has not actively pursued him as a candidate. He also mentioned that there are other eligible and competent politicians within the party who could potentially run for the presidency.
He further highlighted that Jonathan’s wife had previously stated that he had no intentions of running for the presidency again, as he left behind nothing in the Villa to make him to consider returning to the position.
Abdullahi concluded by saying, “Ticket is given to someone who has shown interest.”
