Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), on Sunday hosted prominent opposition figures at his Kano residence during Sallah celebrations in a gathering that has renewed speculation about opposition realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Guests at the event included Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate who has since joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC); Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); and former Bayelsa State governor Senator Seriake Dickson of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Kwankwaso posted photographs of the meeting on his verified X account, describing the occasion as a “joyful Sallah celebration” and wishing “peace, blessings, and prosperity.” The images showed the leaders together at Kwankwaso’s Kano residence.

The private gathering follows a closed-door meeting between Kwankwaso and Governor Makinde in Ibadan in February, a meeting that similarly fuelled talk of possible alliances among opposition figures seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Representatives for the individuals involved did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Analysts say such meetings—whether social or private—are being closely watched for signs of formal coalition-building as parties and politicians position themselves ahead of the next general election cycle.
