Lagos – Former presidential aspirant, Chief Dele Momodu, believes that former President Goodluck Jonathan is the sole Southern politician capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
However, Momodu expressed doubt that Jonathan would re-enter the political arena.
In an interview with New Telegraph, Momodu, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, suggested that Jonathan appears content with his past achievements and unlikely to seek further political office. “No Southern candidate can take on Tinubu except a Goodluck Jonathan, for example. But I doubt if he would want to stress himself,” Momodu stated. “He’s not the kind of person; you can see that he’s a man of contentment.”
Momodu also identified former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the only other significant political threat to Tinubu’s re-election. He alleged that the current political attacks on Abubakar are a deliberate attempt to “demarket him in advance” of the 2027 polls. “The only man they fear, and that’s why they’re already demarketing him in advance, is Atiku Abubakar,” he said.
Momodu’s remarks come amidst growing speculation about the political landscape leading up to the 2027 election. He asserted that Jonathan’s perceived contentment and Abubakar’s continued political relevance are key factors in shaping the potential contest.
