Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed confidence that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will secure victory in all South South states during the 2027 general elections.
During a recent meeting with Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo at his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio described Okpebholo’s election as a “divine ordination” aimed at bringing relief to the people of Edo.
Currently, of the six states in the South South geopolitical zone, the APC governs only Edo and Cross River, while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) controls the remaining four: Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Delta.
In his remarks, Akpabio highlighted that his defection to the APC was motivated by a desire to unify the South South region under the ruling party. He stated, “Under the APC administration, many of us felt the need to change the political landscape to better represent our people at the national level and influence national affairs.”
He further noted, “With the current political permutations and all available indicators, the APC is poised to expand its influence and bring more states into its fold.” Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, expressed optimism that this shift would positively alter the developmental trajectory of the South South region.
Governor Okpebholo, in his visit, emphasized his intention to learn from Akpabio’s experience and leadership. “Witnessing the development in Akwa Ibom, I have come to seek advice and draw from his wealth of experience. He has graciously shared his insights with me,” he remarked.
As the APC sets its sights on the 2027 elections, the party’s strategy and Akpabio’s leadership will be closely watched in the coming months.
