The Zamfara State Government has vehemently denied a widely circulated report claiming that a 22-year-old Christian convert, Zainab Muhamadu, is facing trial and a potential death penalty in a Sharia Court for switching religions.
In a press statement released today by Sulaiman Bala Idris, spokesperson for the Zamfara Governor, the government labeled the story as “completely false” and an attempt to generate traffic on social media platforms.
“We want to categorically state that it is the handiwork of enemies of peace, who are hellbent on creating a tension where there is none,” the statement read. It added that investigations have “verified beyond a reasonable doubt that no such case exists before any Shari’ah Court in Zamfara State.”
The government confirmed that it had swiftly summoned relevant authorities and security agencies to verify the story, which ultimately proved to be “a blatant falsehood.” The Grand Khadi of the Zamfara Sharia Court of Appeal also confirmed that no such case has ever been brought before any Sharia court in the state.
Furthermore, the Zamfara State Government clarified that the picture used in the fake news report is not of a Nigerian woman. “Her name is Aalia, and she is from Texas, United States,” the statement confirmed.
The state government condemned the dissemination of such unverified stories, calling it “yellow journalism” that seeks to create significant religious tension. It urged relevant security agencies to investigate the source of the “fake, misguided story” and prosecute those found responsible to ensure peace in the country.
