The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, to either reinstate the suspended Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Shehu Ahmad Hadi, or disclose the reasons behind his suspension. This demand came through a statement from MURIC’s Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola.
The suspension, announced by Minister Wike on November 14, 2024, left many puzzled, as no explanation was provided for Engr. Hadi’s removal from office. In the interim, Richard Yunana, the Director of Engineering Services at FCDA, was appointed as the acting executive secretary.
MURIC highlighted Engr. Hadi’s distinguished career, noting his previous role as a Commissioner for Works in Gombe State and his unblemished civil service record. The lack of transparency surrounding his suspension has raised concerns about due process and the potential bypassing of standard public service protocols, which typically involve concurrent investigations and fair hearing opportunities for the suspended official.
Prof. Akintola emphasized that silence on the matter could be perceived as a form of impunity, undermining public trust and accountability. He stressed that Nigerians, as taxpayers, deserve clarity on the matter, and the principles of fair hearing should be upheld.
Additionally, Akintola questioned Minister Wike’s approach, comparing his actions to those of an autocrat, and criticized decisions that appear arbitrary and potentially biased. He pointed out issues such as the rapid demolition of homes and the replacement of FCT officials with individuals from Wike’s ethnic background, which he argues undermine notions of probity, transparency, and objectivity.
In light of Engr. Hadi’s contributions to the political landscape, particularly his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, MURIC argues that he deserves more respectful treatment and transparency in the handling of his suspension. The organization urges Minister Wike to address these concerns promptly to restore confidence and fairness in the administration of the FCT.
