The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said public confidence in religious leaders is undermined when they are perceived to openly support particular political figures or parties.
Speaking on the role of religious leaders in Nigeria’s political landscape, Wike argued that comments from clerics are less likely to be viewed as impartial when their political preferences are widely known.
“If a religious leader is perceived or seen to be taking a side, and it’s very clear, it becomes difficult for people to see those comments as helpful or genuine,” he said.
The former Rivers State governor specifically referenced John Onaiyekan, saying the cleric’s political position was no secret.
“I’m aware of Cardinal Onaiyekan’s position. It’s not hidden who he supports. Everybody knows that,” Wike stated.
He further alleged that many religious leaders openly aligned themselves with political interests during Nigeria’s 2023 general election.
“In 2023, religious leaders took sides. It was very open,” he added.
Wike’s remarks come amid continued debate over the role of faith leaders in Nigeria’s democratic process, with differing opinions on whether clerics should publicly express political preferences or maintain strict neutrality.
