Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced that he will soon disclose the details of a peace agreement reached between himself and Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State. The pact was brokered by President Bola Tinubu to restore peace in the state.
Wike made the revelation during a ‘Thank You Visit’ to Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of transparency with the people of Rivers.
In March, following a period of political turmoil and a six-month State of Emergency declared by President Tinubu, the President successfully mediated a peace deal between Wike and Fubara in June, bringing an end to the prolonged crisis.
However, Wike accused Governor Fubara of reneging on the agreement, stating, “Very soon, we will let the people of Rivers State know what we agreed on before Mr. President.” He urged the residents of Tai LGA to be cautious and not trust politicians who fail to keep their promises.
Wike also declared that the people of Rivers State are prepared for the 2027 elections, warning that monetary inducements would not influence the outcome. “What matters most is the will of the people,” he stressed.
He noted that his visit was not for political campaigning but to appreciate the people of Tai for their support during a difficult 2023 election, which culminated in significant development achievements including the establishment of a federal university in Tai.
“See what the risk has resulted in — a federal university sited in Tai and many other benefits,” Wike said.
The visit was also marked by expressions of gratitude from local leaders. Senator Barry Mpigi (APC, Rivers South-East) thanked President Tinubu and Wike for their ongoing support, highlighting the unprecedented developments in the district. “The people never had it this good,” Mpigi remarked. He assured continued solidarity with Wike, pledging support for justice, equity, and fairness.
Bernard Nbar, representing Tai Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, reaffirmed his constituents’ loyalty, saying, “You can count on the Tai people because Tai people keep to their word.”
Tai Local Government Chairman, Mbakpone Okpe, expressed appreciation for Wike’s visit. He acknowledged the minister’s directive to vote for Tinubu in 2023 as a blessing, citing the benefits the community has continued to receive — including appointments, infrastructure projects, and empowerment programs.
“For these reasons and more, we are eager to return Mr. President for a second tenure. We will roll out all our votes for Tinubu and whoever you support,” Okpe stated.
