Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has clarified the reasons behind the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum’s recent decision to reject any coalition plans ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking to The Nation, Makinde emphasized that political alliances must prioritize the interests of all stakeholders within the party. He highlighted the importance of internal consensus before engaging in external coalitions.
“Politics is a game of interest. You must have alignment with the wider organs of your party before you go out to meet other people,” Makinde stated, referencing his successful 2019 coalition in Oyo State as an example of proper procedure.
He explained that the PDP Governors Forum’s opposition stemmed from a lack of information regarding the potential benefits of the proposed coalition. “They have no clue of what is in this coalition for them. They also have no clue whether this is personal or you are doing this in the best interest of the party and the people of Nigeria,” he said.
Makinde refuted claims that the governors’ stance was influenced by a desire to support President Bola Tinubu’s potential second term. He stressed that while individual party members have the right to associate freely, the PDP itself requires a clear understanding of any coalition’s objectives and advantages.
“As a party, we haven’t gotten there,” he concluded, reiterating the need for a transparent and inclusive process in any future political alliances.
