West Ham United have reportedly cooled their pursuit of Nigeria international Raphael Onyedika, with the English Premier League side now turning their attention to DR Congo midfielder Ngal’ayel Mukau.

The 24-year-old Super Eagles star has been a key figure at Belgian side Club Brugge since arriving from Danish Superliga outfit Midtjylland three years ago. Known for his strong defensive presence and tactical discipline, Onyedika has attracted interest from several top European clubs.

Last summer, he was strongly linked to AC Milan, but the Italian giants opted instead for Youssouf Fofana from AS Monaco. This transfer window, West Ham had been tipped as a likely destination for the Nigerian midfielder, with speculation building since the market opened.

However, Belgian football journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that “The Hammers have now downgraded Onyedika on their shortlist” and are prioritising Mukau, who currently plays for French Ligue 1 side Lille.

Mukau, 20, joined Lille last year and has impressed with his close control, high work rate, and physical strength. Valued at around €20 million, his price is considered within West Ham’s budget. The London club will be hoping the young midfielder can replicate the success of other Lille exports such as Amadou Onana, Renato Sanches, Idrissa Gueye, and Yves Bissouma.

Despite the shift in focus, Onyedika has not been completely ruled out. “If West Ham fail to secure Mukau, they may return for Onyedika as both players share similar profiles,” Tavolieri added.

For now, the Nigerian midfielder remains an integral part of Club Brugge’s plans as they aim to reclaim the Belgian Jupiler Pro League title.
