Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to reinstate the petroleum subsidy if elected in 2027, saying his administration would first tackle corruption.
Obi made the promise on Monday at a town-hall meeting organised for the Obi/Kwankwaso ticket in Sokoto, describing corruption as the country’s chief problem.
“People are talking about subsidy, but what it is really about is corruption. By removing corruption, I assure you we will bring back subsidy,” he said. “If elected, we will stop all forms of corruption in every sector of the country.”
Obi urged Nigerians to use the 2027 elections to vote for NDC candidates at all levels, saying addressing the country’s problems is a collective responsibility. He described the party’s approach as a “politics of care and service to Nigerians.”
The former Anambra governor expressed concern about the economy and said his administration would prioritise unity, security and education, and deploy national resources to improve security, schooling and other sectors. “Education is our number one priority after unity and security,” he said. He also pledged to connect all state capitals with rail lines to boost economic activity and development.
NDC vice-presidential candidate Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso said the visit was meant to engage Sokoto residents and seek their support ahead of the 2027 polls. He said the delegation earlier visited the Sultan of Sokoto, who prayed for the success of the ticket and conveyed his goodwill.
Kwankwaso noted that parts of the country, particularly the North-West, face security challenges from banditry and kidnapping, and said the party is committed to mitigating those problems.
Earlier, NDC governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Dr. Shamsudeen Haido, pledged to provide good governance if elected. State party chairman Alhaji Bello Yabo said the meeting gave residents a chance to hear directly from Obi and Kwankwaso about their plans for the country.
