The Nigerian film industry is once again in mourning following the death of veteran actor Olusegun Akinremi, widely known as Chief Kanran. The actor, famed for his comedic talent and powerful stage presence, passed away on Friday, August 15, at the age of 70.
Known for his roles in iconic Yoruba films such as Vigilante, Ose-Sango, and Eri Okan, Chief Kanran was a beloved figure in Nollywood. His ability to weave cultural stories with humour earned him admiration not only within the Yoruba film circle but across Nigeria’s entire movie landscape. Over the years, his work became a symbol of the richness of Nigerian cinema, drawing fans from all walks of life.
The sad news was first shared by media personality Seun Oloketuyi, the convener of the Best of Nollywood Awards, who posted on Instagram, “Popular actor, Segun Remi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, died Friday morning.” The message sent shockwaves through social media, with numerous tributes pouring in from fans and colleagues alike.
One fan, Mama Yetti, expressed her sorrow, saying, “Oh no! May his gentle soul RIP.” Another, Oluwatosin, commented, “Wow… Hopefully, it’s not depression,” while a shocked Gamo Inc wrote, “This man that I still saw last week? Na wa oo.
