The United States Embassy in Abuja has advised American citizens in Nigeria to remain indoors after the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) announced plans to stage marches in Abuja and other cities across the country on Friday.
In a security alert issued on Friday, the embassy said it had received information indicating that IMN members intend to assemble and carry out demonstrations in the federal capital and several other locations nationwide.
The mission urged U.S. nationals to exercise caution and avoid areas where gatherings or protests may occur.
“U.S. citizens are advised to remain in their residences and stay alert to their surroundings,” the embassy said in the advisory.
Authorities often issue such warnings ahead of large demonstrations due to the possibility of traffic disruptions, clashes with security forces, or other security risks.
The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, a Shia Muslim group, has staged several demonstrations in the past, particularly in Abuja, where protests have at times led to heightened security deployments.
The embassy encouraged its citizens to monitor local news and follow instructions from Nigerian authorities while taking necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
