The United Nations has issued a sharp warning to Israel, urging an immediate halt to its proposed military takeover of the occupied Gaza Strip. UN human rights chief Volker Turk condemned the plan on Friday, labelling it a direct violation of international law and a threat to Palestinian self-determination.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office revealed the controversial strategy, which aims to “defeat” Hamas by seizing control of Gaza City while distributing humanitarian aid to civilians outside conflict zones. However, Turk slammed the move as contrary to the International Court of Justice’s ruling, which demands Israel end its occupation swiftly to pave the way for a two-state solution.
In a forceful statement, Turk called on Israel to ensure “the full, unfettered flow of humanitarian aid” and demanded that Palestinian armed groups release hostages unconditionally. He also pressed Israel to free Palestinians held in arbitrary detention, underscoring the need for compliance with international obligations.
The UN’s stark intervention highlights escalating tensions, as the international community watches closely for Israel’s next move in this volatile crisis
