The Senate has launched a comprehensive investigation into alleged inefficiencies plaguing Nigeria’s railway system, amid growing public concern over service reliability, safety, and value for money in the sector.
The probe, announced during plenary, is expected to scrutinise the operations, funding, infrastructure, and management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and other agencies involved in rail transport. Lawmakers said the move was driven by persistent complaints from passengers and stakeholders over delays, poor maintenance, and underutilisation of rail assets.
According to senators backing the motion, despite significant government investment in rail modernisation in recent years, many routes continue to suffer from irregular schedules, technical faults, and limited coverage. They argued that the situation undermines the rail sector’s potential to ease pressure on roads, reduce transportation costs, and boost economic activity.
The upper chamber has mandated its relevant committees to conduct hearings with key officials from the Ministry of Transportation, the NRC, and other stakeholders. The panels are also expected to review existing contracts, funding arrangements, and the implementation of rail projects across the country.
Some lawmakers stressed that an efficient railway system is critical for a country of Nigeria’s size, particularly for moving goods and passengers safely and affordably. They warned that inefficiencies in the system could slow trade, discourage investment, and hamper regional connectivity.
Industry observers say the investigation could pave the way for reforms, clearer accountability, and improved service delivery if its recommendations are fully implemented.
The committees are expected to report their findings and recommendations to the Senate in the coming weeks.
