National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, stressing that Nigerians across political and social divides had long agreed on the removal of fuel subsidy and other policy measures.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, Yilwatda described the reforms as “unavoidable,” noting that they have already begun to yield results.

“All Nigerians accepted that we needed those changes at that point in time. Almost every candidate agreed subsidy had to go, that parallel forex was unsustainable, and that tax reforms were necessary. These were not partisan issues — they were national imperatives,” he said.

The APC chairman highlighted that government revenues have surged, with federal, state, and local governments sharing ₦2 trillion last month, compared to about ₦500 billion previously. He added that states once unable to pay salaries are now financially stable.

“In 2023, around 24 states were borrowing to pay salaries. Today, no state is behind; all governors and local councils are up to date,” he noted.

Yilwatda maintained that Tinubu’s reforms are not only strengthening the federal government but also empowering states and local governments, enabling improved service delivery nationwide.
