President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Service Chiefs to move to Maiduguri and run the security operation themselves, after Monday night’s bomb blasts killed more than 20 people and injured over 100.
Daily Trust reported that suspected Boko Haram fighters set off the explosions around 7:25 p.m. on Monday, striking several sites at once.
Tinubu spoke just before leaving on a state visit to the United Kingdom. He said Nigeria would not be rattled.
“The news from Maiduguri is heartbreaking,” he said. “I mourn the dead, stand with the injured, and share the pain of Borno people in this difficult moment.
“Let me be clear: these attacks are the last gasp of killers who feel our troops closing in. We will keep the pressure on every criminal cell, wherever they hide.
“I salute the gallant troops who fought off the assault on our bases. The terrorists struck out of desperation; our forces will finish the job.
“Only last weekend I approved new equipment and support for the security agencies after a meeting with the intelligence chiefs. That roll-out is under way.
“Now I am telling the Service Chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri and take direct control. Emergency teams must also give the best care to the wounded. No corner of Nigeria will shelter these killers—we will find, face and crush them. Nigeria will not live in fear.”
