President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday made a surprise appearance at the iconic Eyo Festival in Lagos, describing the centuries-old cultural procession as a powerful symbol of Nigeria’s vibrant tourism potential.
The President, who attended the festival alongside top government officials and traditional leaders, said the event demonstrated the richness of Lagos heritage and the vast opportunities it offers for cultural tourism and economic growth.
According to Tinubu, the Eyo masquerade festival—known globally for its colourful costumes, rhythmic performances and deep traditional relevance—remains one of the country’s strongest cultural assets capable of attracting international visitors and stimulating local enterprise.
“This festival showcases who we are as a people—rich in culture, united in spirit and resilient in identity. Nigeria’s tourism sector can thrive when we preserve and promote events like this,” he said.
The President commended the Lagos State Government and the Oba of Lagos for sustaining the tradition and ensuring its global appeal. He added that his administration would continue to support initiatives that preserve cultural heritage while strengthening the creative and tourism industries.
The 2025 edition of the Eyo Festival drew thousands of residents, tourists and cultural enthusiasts, reaffirming Lagos as a leading cultural hub in Africa.
