President Bola Tinubu has directed the country’s service chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri, the epicentre of escalating insurgent attacks, following a series of coordinated assaults in the northeast.
The move comes as Nigeria faces a sharp uptick in violence attributed to Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants, targeting both military and civilian sites. Sources indicate that the president aims to strengthen command oversight and improve operational responses on the ground.
Military officials say the deployment of top commanders is expected to streamline coordination between units and enhance intelligence-sharing, while also reassuring local communities amid growing insecurity. Analysts describe the relocation as a strategic effort to bolster Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations in one of the country’s most volatile regions.
President Tinubu has called for a “comprehensive and immediate” response to prevent further loss of life and to restore stability in affected areas.
