The Nigerian military says the number of terrorists surrendering to security forces has risen by 213% in one week, describing the development as a sign of growing pressure on armed groups operating across the country.
According to the military, the sharp increase followed intensified counter-terrorism operations targeting terrorist strongholds, supply routes and hideouts.
The military said the latest surrender figures reflected the impact of sustained operations by troops, alongside efforts to encourage fighters to abandon their weapons and embrace the government’s rehabilitation process.
It said the development was also evidence that ongoing military pressure was weakening the operational capacity of terrorist groups in affected areas.
Security forces have continued to conduct offensive and intelligence-led operations against armed groups, particularly in parts of northern Nigeria where terrorist and bandit attacks have persisted.
The military said troops would maintain the pressure on terrorists while providing opportunities for those willing to surrender to do so.
It urged communities to continue supporting security agencies with credible information that could assist in tracking terrorists and preventing attacks.
The surge in surrenders comes amid renewed efforts by Nigerian authorities to intensify the fight against terrorism and restore security in communities affected by years of violence.
The military said it would continue its operations until terrorist groups are significantly weakened and lasting peace is restored.
