Abuja – Tensions are mounting at the headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as staff are set to return to work after the festive break. This unrest stems from a contentious battle over the party’s secretaryship position, with both Senator Samuel Anyanwu and former National Youth Leader Sunday Ude-Okoye asserting claims to the role.
Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who has been serving as acting National Secretary since the PDP’s elective National Convention in 2021, was recently ousted by an Enugu Division of the Court of Appeal. This decision upheld a December 2023 High Court ruling that declared Ude-Okoye the rightful successor.
In response, Ude-Okoye officially assumed the position on December 30, 2024, declaring his office takeover in compliance with the court’s directive. He expressed gratitude for the support of various party forums and leaders while asserting his readiness to oversee the PDP operations.
Despite Anyanwu’s claims of obtaining a “stay of execution” order, a contempt of court notice, Form 48, was issued against him on January 6, 2025, warning of potential imprisonment for non-compliance.
Tensions have escalated with reports of violence linked to the dispute. Anyanwu’s aide, Emmanuel Okoronkwo, reportedly assaulted a journalist from The Sun Newspapers, barring media access to the secretariat. The PDP has condemned the incident, with National Secretary Debo Ologunagba promising disciplinary action against Okoronkwo.
Adding to the turmoil, the group “Fix PDP, Fix Nigeria” has alleged a planned attack on PDP National Working Committee members, purportedly orchestrated by high-ranking party officials. They have called for police intervention and protection for committee members.
