Nigeria’s Budget Office has clarified that budgetary allocations to the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Implementation Committee (PFIPC) originated from an agency established during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, dismissing claims that the committee was created solely to attract fresh government funding.
The clarification follows public scrutiny over allocations to the PFIPC in the 2025 budget, with questions raised about the legitimacy of the funding and the legal basis for the committee’s operations.
According to the Budget Office, the allocation did not create a new spending structure but was derived from an existing government agency that was established under the Buhari administration. It said the restructuring was carried out within the framework of government reforms and did not amount to the creation of a new budget line.
The office maintained that the funding process complied with existing public finance regulations, stressing that the committee’s activities are backed by lawful administrative arrangements aimed at advancing fiscal policy and tax reform initiatives.
It added that claims suggesting the PFIPC was established as a “fake agency” to siphon public funds were inaccurate and failed to reflect the administrative history behind the allocation.
The Budget Office reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability in the management of public finances, urging Nigerians to verify information before drawing conclusions on government expenditure.
The PFIPC was set up to coordinate the implementation of fiscal and tax reform policies intended to improve revenue generation, simplify Nigeria’s tax system and strengthen the country’s fiscal framework.
