Amidst heightened tensions in Kano, the Nigeria Police Force has formally invited the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, for questioning regarding an incident that transpired during the recent Eid-el-Fitr celebrations and alleged violation of a ban on Durbar activities.
As previously reported by SolaceBase on Sunday, March 30, 2025, the Kano State Police Command apprehended Usman Sagiru, 20, in connection with the alleged killing and assault of vigilante members within Emir Sanusi’s entourage following Eid prayers. The command subsequently launched an investigation into the matter, extending an invitation for interrogation to Alhaji Wada Isyaku, the Shamakin Kano.
According to an official invitation letter dated April 4, 2025, and signed by CP Olajide Rufus Ibitoye, Commissioner of Police (Operations), the invitation to the Emir was issued under the directive of the Inspector General of Police.
The letter mandates Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II to appear at the Force Intelligence Department headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, by 10:00 a.m.
Prior to the Sallah festivities, security agencies had imposed restrictions on traditional Durbar processions, citing concerns related to public safety and the potential for unrest.
Despite this explicit directive, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II reportedly proceeded with the customary Durbar displays on Sallah day and the subsequent Hawan Nasarawa, which included a visit to the Kano State Government House. These events drew significant crowds and widespread media coverage, potentially putting the Emir in direct contravention of the security advisory. The police invitation is now fueling speculation about the consequences of the alleged breach and the ongoing investigation into the violent incident within the Emir’s convoy. The development is anticipated to further heighten the already palpable tension within the state.
