The Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, departed Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo on Sunday morning en route to Bloemfontein, South Africa, ahead of their high-stakes 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana.
The match, scheduled for Tuesday at Free State Stadium, poses a make-or-break moment for Nigeria’s qualification hopes. Currently with ten points from seven games in Group C, the Eagles must defeat South Africa, who lead the group by six points, to keep their campaign alive.
Coach Eric Chelle’s squad will notably miss talismanic striker Victor Osimhen due to a shin bruise sustained in the recent 1-0 victory over Rwanda. Osimhen, who left the pitch early after an attempted goal was disallowed for offside, was advised by medical staff to sit out the trip. “The medical team ruled out his participation after scans confirmed the injury,” confirmed team sources.
His absence shifts the goal-scoring responsibility to forwards Tolu Arokodare, who netted the decisive goal against Rwanda, Cyriel Dessers, and Ademola Lookman. “Arokodare and co. now shoulder the task of breaking down Hugo Broos’ formidable side,” analysts say.
The encounter between Nigeria and South Africa is critical not only for World Cup ambitions but also as a symbolic clash between two former African champions.
