Russia and Nigeria ended their international friendly match in a 1-1 stalemate on Friday, after a tightly contested encounter that tested both sides’ discipline and mental strength.
The match, played with notable intensity, saw Russia draw first blood in the 27th minute following an own goal by Nigeria’s Semi Ajayi. Trying to clear a threatening ball inside the box, Ajayi misjudged the trajectory and deflected it past his own goalkeeper.
The Super Eagles, undeterred by the early setback, held firm and clawed their way back into the contest. In the 71st minute, Tolu Arokodare found the equaliser for Nigeria after a well-timed run and sharp finish. “It was a proud moment to get the goal for Nigeria,” Arokodare said after the match. “We stayed calm and kept believing.”
Statistically, Russia enjoyed more of the ball, controlling 58% of possession to Nigeria’s 42%. Despite that imbalance, the Super Eagles made better use of their chances, with six total shots and four on target a higher efficiency than Russia’s 10 shots, which only yielded two on target.
Pass accuracy also leaned in Russia’s favour, with the hosts completing 497 passes at 87% accuracy. Nigeria recorded 367 passes with an 81% completion rate, showcasing a more direct and compact approach.
Fouls were frequent, highlighting the physical nature of the game. Russia committed 16 fouls and were shown three yellow cards. Nigeria, more disciplined, had 11 fouls and received one booking. Both sides won four corners apiece, while Nigeria were flagged offside three times to Russia’s once.
Though the match ended without a winner, Nigeria’s resilience and attacking intent in the second half will be viewed as a positive sign ahead of future fixtures.
