Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore is set to spearhead a major protest in Abuja on October 20, demanding the immediate release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu.
The demonstration, tagged *#FreeNnamdiKanuNow*, is expected to draw activists, civil society groups, and supporters of Kanu from across Nigeria. Sowore, a vocal critic of the government’s handling of Kanu’s case, described the protest as a “necessary step to challenge injustice.”
*”The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu without due process is a violation of his fundamental rights,”* Sowore stated. *”This protest is not just about Kanu—it’s about upholding the rule of law and demanding accountability from those in power.”*
Kanu, who leads the pro-Biafra separatist movement, has been in detention since his controversial extradition in 2021. His legal team and supporters argue that his arrest and prolonged incarceration are politically motivated.
The planned protest has already sparked mixed reactions, with some Nigerians supporting the call for Kanu’s release while others view it as a potential security risk. Authorities have yet to comment on whether they will permit the demonstration.
Sowore urged participants to remain peaceful but resolute. *”We will march with one voice—no violence, no destruction, just a firm demand for justice,”* he said.
