ice-President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which opens on Monday and runs until 28 September.

Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the high-level debates, announce the country’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement, and take part in a series of side events, bilateral meetings, and roundtables.

On arrival at John F. Kennedy International Airport, he was received by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar, and Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires at the UN Mission, Ambassador Samson Itegboje, alongside other senior officials.

Highlighting Nigeria’s priorities for UNGA 80, Tuggar said the country would continue to press for a United Nations Global Convention on Taxation and Africa’s representation on the UN Security Council. “Nigeria has consistently championed Africa’s common position, under the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration, calling for at least two permanent seats,” he stated.

The Vice-President will also reiterate Nigeria’s stance on global peacekeeping and conflicts, including the crises in Gaza, eastern Congo, and Sudan.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna said Nigeria’s participation would further cement its role as Africa’s leading economy and investment destination. “We are focusing on solid minerals, agriculture, and skills-based education. The Vice-President’s address will showcase Nigeria’s strength,” he said.

Industry, Trade and Investment Minister Olajumoke Oduwole added that Nigeria would host an “Investment Day” on Monday to highlight reforms and opportunities in sectors such as solid minerals, telecommunications, and technology.

Shettima is also expected to attend the African Union Peace and Security Council meeting and hold talks with Sudan’s Prime Minister, among other high-level engagements.
