Vice-President Kashim Shettima has joined world leaders at the United Nations headquarters in New York for the opening of the high-level General Debate of the 81st UN General Assembly.
Mr Shettima arrived in New York on Monday to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and lead Nigeria’s delegation to the annual gathering, which brings together leaders and senior officials from across the world. (Premium Times Nigeria)
The General Debate, which began on Tuesday, is being held under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.” Discussions are expected to focus on international peace and security, sustainable development, climate action, global cooperation and reform of international institutions. US President Donald Trump is also attending the gathering and delivered his address to the General Assembly on Tuesday, amid heightened international tensions and debates over the role and future of the United Nations. (Reuters)
Nigeria is scheduled to deliver its national statement on Thursday, with Vice-President Shettima expected to outline the country’s position on major international issues, including peace and security, economic development, climate finance and reform of the global financial architecture. Mr Shettima has said Nigeria’s participation will be guided by the country’s national interest, while advocating for stronger representation and greater opportunities for developing countries within the international system.
He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with world leaders, international organisations and development partners during the high-level week.
The 81st General Assembly high-level debate runs from 22 to 28 September at the UN headquarters in New York, bringing together nearly 130 heads of state and government in person. (United Nations)
