Nigeria’s Vice-President Kashim Shettima and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara have commissioned a 33.5km road project as part of efforts to improve infrastructure and expand economic opportunities in the state.

Speaking at the commissioning, Mr Shettima said infrastructure development should not be viewed simply as the construction of roads and bridges, but as a means of creating and distributing opportunities across the country.

He said nations become “congested” when opportunities are concentrated in a few locations, stressing the importance of spreading development and economic activities across different communities.

According to the Vice-President, improved road infrastructure can stimulate commerce, connect communities and provide people with greater access to jobs and other economic opportunities.

The 33.5km road, commissioned alongside Governor Fubara, is expected to strengthen connectivity within Rivers State and support movement between communities and economic centres.

The project comes as governments at both federal and state levels continue to prioritise road infrastructure as a key component of economic development.

Mr Shettima said investments in infrastructure were essential to creating an environment where people could access opportunities regardless of where they lived.

The commissioning also underscores the growing emphasis on infrastructure as a tool for promoting economic activity, improving connectivity and supporting development across Nigeria.
