•Lalong Heads INEC Committee, Other Changes Announced

The Nigerian Senate has announced a minor reshuffle of its standing committees, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio citing the need to enhance legislative productivity.
“We will continue to make adjustments where necessary in order to deliver on our legislative mandate,” Akpabio stated during the resumption of plenary on Tuesday. He also instructed Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to ensure all committees submit their activity reports for deliberation on the senate floor.
Akpabio urged his colleagues to recommit to national service with integrity and patriotism, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing legislation that promotes national unity.
Key changes announced include:
- INEC and Electoral Matters: Senator Simon Lalong (Plateau South) has been appointed chairman, replacing Senator Sharafadeen Ali (Oyo South).
- Agricultural Institutions and Research: Senator Sharafadeen Ali now chairs this committee, previously led by Senator Simon Lalong.
- Tourism: Senator Pam Nwadkon (Plateau North) takes over as chairman, replacing Senator Anthony Ani (Ebonyi South).
- South East Development Commission (SEDC): Senator Anthony Ani has been named vice-chairman, replacing Senator Eze Kenneth Emeka (Ebonyi Central). Senator Emeka retains his chairmanship of the information committee and his role as vice-chairman of the water resources committee.
These adjustments, according to Akpabio, are aimed at optimizing the Senate’s operations and ensuring efficient delivery of its legislative responsibilities.
