A non-governmental organization, MonITng, has raised concerns about an allegedly exclusive empowerment programme led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The initiative, which took place on December 30, 2024, in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, is under scrutiny for its limited reach and potential misuse of public funds.

MonITng’s founder, Ilevbaoje Uadamen, criticized the programme’s structure and execution, highlighting that it catered to a select few while neglecting many who are in genuine need. Uadamen underscored the necessity of involving citizens in the planning process to ensure that such initiatives effectively address community needs.

He also warned of the potential for misuse, suggesting that beneficiaries might resell the items provided, thus undermining the programme’s goals. “Empowerment programmes should be transparent, accountable, and inclusive,” Uadamen stated. “Without these principles, they risk becoming mere publicity stunts rather than avenues for real impact.”

MonITng has called for a thorough review of empowerment programmes to ensure that public funds are used effectively and equitably. The organization urges policymakers to prioritize citizen engagement in future initiatives to enhance their impact and relevance.
