A heated exchange has erupted in Nigeria’s Senate after lawmakers clashed over proposed amendments to the chamber’s standing orders, with accusations of personal ambition overshadowing national interest.

Abdul Ningi criticised fellow legislators over their handling of the debate, describing the controversy as driven by “selfishness” on both sides of the divide.

“This is selfishness from both those who proposed it and those who opposed it,” Ningi said. “When we were talking about electoral reform in the name of party supremacy, many of them kept quiet. Now, because they feel they have political ambitions, the discussion is no longer about Nigeria but about people who want to aspire.”

The dispute centres on proposed changes to the Senate Standing Orders, a set of internal rules that govern legislative procedures and leadership contests within the upper chamber.

The debate has exposed deepening tensions among senators, with critics warning that personal political calculations are increasingly shaping institutional reforms.

Observers say the row reflects broader concerns about governance priorities in Nigeria’s legislature, where reform efforts are often entangled with succession politics and intra-party rivalry.
