As the race for the 2027 general election intensifies, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expressed confidence in its ability to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other opposition parties. The party is committed to registering new members across the country in preparation for the upcoming elections.
Abubakar Dogara, the national vice chairman of the North Central zonal caucus, made this declaration during the SDP North-Central Zonal Caucus meeting held on Thursday in Nasarawa State.
Dogara emphasized that efforts are underway to boost party membership, asserting that the SDP has become the preferred choice for the Nigerian populace. He outlined the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections, which include meetings at various levels—zone, national, ward, state, and local government.
“We are actively conducting meetings and registering new members across the country,” he stated. “Our membership cards have often been exhausted at the state level, which is a testament to our growing appeal.”
Dogara expressed optimism about the SDP’s prospects, saying, “We are preparing to take over the leadership of the country come 2027, by the grace of God. I believe that SDP is now the bride of the nation, with everyone wanting to join us. Even you in the media may soon become part of our membership.”
He acknowledged key supporters of the party in the North Central region, including Honourable Jonathan Gaza, Prince Adewale Adebayo, and Honourable Femi Olaniyi Ferrari, for their ongoing contributions.
One of the resolutions from the meeting was the party’s commitment to protect its structures and image, urging Nigerians to join the SDP and support its candidates to reshape the nation’s narrative.
“SDP is the alternative party in Nigeria now. Our message to Nigerians is to come en masse and join the party,” Dogara added. He reiterated the importance of adhering to the party’s constitutional provisions, which mandate that all card-carrying members must register at ward, state, and national levels.
“The constitution emphasizes that the welfare and security of the people should be prioritized. If the current government has failed in this regard, it is because they are not respecting the provisions of our party’s constitution,” he said.
In a related statement, Idoko Idoto, the chairman of the SDP in Benue State, expressed confidence that the party would emerge victorious in the 2027 elections, both in Benue and nationwide.
“SDP has a 100% chance in Benue State. We have previously governed the state, and we are prepared to showcase credible candidates again,” Idoto asserted. “Come 2027, SDP will come with full force, taking over Benue State and winning seats in the House of Representatives and State Assembly.”
