The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has firmly rejected the idea of merging with other political parties in ongoing coalition discussions aimed at unseating the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a communiqué released following a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja, and signed by National Publicity Secretary Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the SDP emphasized its commitment to serving as a credible platform for Nigerians seeking change, while categorically ruling out any merger.

The party reiterated its dedication to good governance, national unity, and social justice, stating that it welcomes patriotic Nigerians but not on the basis of a merger or a clean slate arrangement.

“The SDP is focused on championing the national quest for social justice, improving citizens’ lives, promoting national progress, and ensuring sustainable development,” the statement read.

It further emphasized its commitment to accommodating all patriotic politicians and young Nigerians, while maintaining a clear stance against any merger or collaborative clean slate initiatives.

Strengthening Party Structures Ahead of 2027 Elections

The NWC has also outlined strategies to bolster the party’s local and diaspora structures in preparation for expanded roles in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

To facilitate this, the SDP announced simplified membership registration procedures at the state level, to be managed by existing structures under state chairmen. The party plans to introduce a computer-assisted harmonization system for membership revalidation and management.

“For optimal efficiency, the NWC is refining the management of the party’s affairs at various levels to ensure seamless integration of both old and new members across the country,” Aiyenigba stated.

He urged Nigerians to maintain their faith in the SDP, describing it as a “bastion of refreshing hope” dedicated to addressing the pressing socioeconomic challenges facing the nation.
