— Russia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Podyelyshev, has firmly denied claims that Nigerians are being recruited to fight in the war in Ukraine, describing any such activities as illegal and not sanctioned by the Russian state.
Speaking amid growing concerns over alleged foreign recruitment, Podyelyshev said the Russian government has no programme or policy aimed at enlisting Nigerians or other foreign nationals for combat operations.
“Any individual or group claiming to recruit Nigerians on behalf of Russia is acting unlawfully and without state backing,” the ambassador said, stressing that Moscow does not support or authorise such actions.
The clarification follows reports circulating on social media and in local outlets suggesting that some Nigerians may have been targeted by intermediaries promising financial rewards or opportunities abroad in exchange for military service.
Nigerian authorities have repeatedly warned citizens against falling victim to overseas recruitment schemes, urging young people in particular to verify job offers and travel opportunities through official channels.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, now in its third year, has drawn international scrutiny over alleged foreign fighter recruitment, with several countries cautioning their citizens against becoming involved in the conflict.
Podyelyshev reiterated that Russia respects Nigerian law and sovereignty, adding that both governments continue to cooperate on diplomatic and security matters.
