Ukrainian defenses downed 61 of the Shahed-type drones, but the assault underscored the unrelenting intensity of Russia’s campaign, launched in February 2022, which has claimed thousands of lives.
The Alaska summit, held in a remote US state, had raised hopes for a breakthrough in halting the war. However, no ceasefire agreement emerged, despite months of Western pressure on the Kremlin to pause its aggression.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has yet to comment publicly on the talks’ outcome.
