Veteran rapper Michael Stephens, popularly known as Ruggedman, has voiced his concerns about the state of Nigerian hip-hop and the recognition of his contributions to the genre.

In a recent interview with Saturday Beats, Ruggedman acknowledged that rap has taken a back seat to afrobeats, attributing the shift to the genre’s simplicity and faster financial returns.

“Rap in Nigeria has taken a back seat to afrobeats because it’s easier to make afrobeats,” he said. “Good rap requires more than just a catchy beat and popular street lamba. People in this generation want the easy life.”

He explained that while some artists are evolving within the rap genre, many are adapting by blending rap with afrobeats or singing to stay relevant. “You don’t pay bills with titles like ‘the best rapper’ or ‘legendary rapper,’” he added.

Reflecting on his legacy, Ruggedman expressed disappointment over the lack of recognition for his role in shaping Nigerian hip-hop. “I don’t think I got enough recognition for what I contributed to Nigerian hip-hop culture,” he said. “But I’m etched in the history books for life, and I believe a time will come when I’ll get my flowers.”

He noted that younger fans often overlook his impact due to a lack of research, but he appreciates those who still acknowledge his influence. “When I realise some Gen Z folks make such posts, I understand they know little about our era; they’re too lazy to research, so I forgive them,” he said.

Ruggedman also announced a bold new project: “Best of Ruggedman: The Acoustic Sessions Vol. 1,” set to release on October 24, 2025. The album will feature five of his tracks performed over acoustic guitar, without beats or additional instrumentation.

“You’ll hear me rap five selected tracks over just acoustic guitar music — no beats, no extra instruments. Just bars and heart,” he shared.

With this upcoming release, Ruggedman aims to push creative boundaries and remind fans of the lyrical depth that defined his era.
