Unrest broke out in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday after residents set alight campaign posters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

A video sighted by OBSERVERS TIMES shows the NDC chairman for Ungogo, Bilyaminu Bachirawa, being pulled down from a moving motorcycle by a crowd. The footage appears to show angry youths pursuing the motorcycle and shouting as they surrounded Bachirawa; he was reportedly close to being lynched before bystanders intervened.

The NDC announced Obi as its presidential candidate on Saturday evening and shortly after unveiled Kwankwaso as his running mate. The pair had recently left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the NDC, citing internal divisions and ongoing court cases within the ADC.

There was no immediate comment from NDC officials or the police on the incident as of publication. The circumstances that triggered the attack on the posters and the party official remain unclear.

The disturbance highlights rising tensions following recent realignments in the run-up to next year’s general election.
