The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over allegations of mismanagement and irregularities involving $4.6 billion in health grants.

The decision followed the adoption of a motion raised during plenary on Thursday, highlighting concerns over the alleged diversion and misuse of funds meant for strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Lawmakers expressed dismay that the huge grants, sourced from international donors and development partners to improve healthcare delivery, may have been compromised through corruption and poor oversight.

The House mandated its Committees on Health, Anti-Corruption, and Public Accounts to conduct a comprehensive probe into the utilisation of the funds and to summon the heads of the EFCC and ICPC for explanations.

Members further stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the management of donor funds, warning that such scandals could undermine Nigeria’s credibility with global health partners.

The committees are expected to report back to the House within four weeks for further legislative action.
