Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised the remand of activist and politician Omoyele Sowore, describing the development as a “dangerous regression for democracy” and a threat to fundamental civil liberties.
In a strongly worded statement, Obi said the decision to remand Sowore raises serious concerns about the protection of free speech and the rule of law in Nigeria. He warned that silencing dissenting voices through judicial or state actions undermines democratic values and weakens public confidence in the country’s institutions.
Obi stressed that democracy thrives on the free exchange of ideas, constructive criticism and respect for citizens’ rights, urging authorities to uphold justice and constitutional freedoms.
He further called on relevant institutions to ensure that the legal process remains fair, transparent and free from political influence, insisting that the protection of civil liberties is essential for the growth and stability of any democratic society.
