The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed profound sorrow at the passing of Leon Usigbe, the Abuja Bureau Chief of the Nigerian Tribune. In a statement released on Sunday, the party’s spokesperson, Debo Ologunagba, hailed Mr Usigbe as an exemplary journalist whose work profoundly shaped Nigeria’s media landscape.
Mr Ologunagba described Mr Usigbe as a highly skilled, insightful, and dedicated professional who tirelessly championed multi-party democracy, good governance, and public accountability. “Leon Usigbe was a fearless journalist who upheld the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law. His reporting, opinions, and sharp commentaries consistently held those in power to account,” he said.
The PDP highlighted Mr Usigbe’s professionalism, warmth, and strong rapport with colleagues, noting his significant contributions as a correspondent covering the party for the Nigerian Tribune. His calm demeanour and rigorous approach to journalism earned him widespread respect within the industry.
The party extended its heartfelt condolences to the management and staff of the Nigerian Tribune, the PDP Press Corps, the Nigerian Union of Journalists, and Mr Usigbe’s family, particularly his widow and children. “We share in their grief and pray for divine comfort and strength during this difficult time,” Mr Ologunagba added.
The PDP stated that Mr Usigbe’s legacy as a courageous and principled journalist would continue to inspire Nigeria’s democratic journey.
