•••Calls for Cohesion Amidst Internal Divisions and Discontent
By John Audu, Abuja.
Umar Damagum, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called for forgiveness and unity among party members to address the ongoing internal crisis that has threatened the party’s integrity. Speaking at the conclusion of a two-day workshop in Birnin Kebbi aimed at enhancing media awareness and political cohesion, Damagum urged members to refrain from spreading misinformation and engaging in character assassination.
The PDP is currently facing significant leadership challenges, with ongoing attempts to replace Damagum and install a substantive National Chairman. This turmoil has resulted in divisions among state governors elected under the PDP banner and has created rifts within the party’s National Working Committee.
Damagum emphasized the need for a united front, stating, “Our leadership will continue to embrace forgiveness, cohesion, and unity rather than falling prey to injustice and propaganda. We must reject the forces of division and discord and remain focused on our collective mission.”
He condemned those within the party who perpetuate discord, asserting that the PDP is larger than any individual and must prioritize building a cohesive and progressive organization. He warned that actions aimed at sowing division could jeopardize the party’s long-term success and undermine the efforts of its dedicated members.
In his address, Damagum reassured party members that leadership positions would not be vacated without a transparent and democratic process. He also criticized attempts by certain individuals to escalate tensions for personal gain, urging all members to focus on the party’s broader goals.
The workshop, organized by the PDP Supporters Group, aimed to empower social media handlers to promote unity and effective communication within the party. Participants from various North-West states attended, highlighting the importance of addressing the party’s internal strife to ensure a successful electoral outcome in future elections.
