The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made an impressive start to its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, with over 69,000 Nigerians completing their online pre-registration within the first seven hours of the portal going live.
According to a press release from INEC, the registration portal was launched at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, and by 3:30 p.m., a total of 69,376 Nigerians had successfully pre-registered online. Of this number, 33,803 (48.7%) are male, while 35,573 (51.3%) are female. A significant portion of the registrants are young Nigerians, with 48,033 (69.2%) falling within the 18-34 age range.
INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, shared that the online portal remains open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing Nigerians to complete their registration at their convenience. The portal can be accessed at https://cvr.inecnigeria.org.
For those who prefer in-person registration, INEC has announced that it will begin physical voter registration at its 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide, starting on August 25, 2025. This in-person registration will be available from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekdays.
Both the online and in-person registration options will run simultaneously throughout the duration of the CVR process, as outlined in INEC’s earlier schedule. This provides an opportunity for Nigerians who pre-registered online to finalize their registration in person.
INEC has committed to providing weekly updates on the CVR, including breakdowns by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability status. The commission also reiterated that voter registration is exclusively for Nigerian citizens who are at least 18 years old and who have not previously registered.
INEC also clarified that the CVR process allows for voter registration transfers, both inter-State and intra-State, as well as the replacement of lost or damaged voter cards. However, the commission emphasized that double or multiple registrations are illegal and constitute a violation of the law.
