Opposition lawmakers in Nigeria have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deploy overwhelming force against terrorists and bandits threatening communities across the country.
The lawmakers also urged the federal government to release former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, whose continued detention they described as politically motivated.
They made the demands amid growing concerns over insecurity, with several parts of the country facing attacks by armed groups, kidnappings and other forms of violence.
The lawmakers said the government needed to adopt a more decisive approach to tackling terrorism, arguing that security agencies should be given the resources and operational backing required to confront armed groups.
They called for a comprehensive military and intelligence operation capable of dismantling terrorist networks, rather than relying solely on reactive measures after attacks have occurred.
The opposition legislators also criticised what they described as the government’s treatment of Mr El-Rufai, insisting that political differences should not be allowed to undermine democratic principles or the rule of law.
Mr El-Rufai, who served as Kaduna governor from 2015 to 2023, has remained a prominent figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics since leaving office.
The lawmakers’ demands come as pressure continues to mount on President Tinubu’s administration to improve security and address concerns over the safety of citizens.
Security remains one of the biggest political issues ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with opposition parties increasingly using the government’s handling of terrorism and insecurity to challenge its record.
The presidency has repeatedly maintained that its administration is committed to restoring security and strengthening the country’s security architecture.
The government has also continued to urge Nigerians to support security agencies by providing credible information that could assist efforts to identify and dismantle criminal and terrorist networks.
