Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has launched a rural electrification initiative with the distribution and installation of 30 units of 500kVA transformers across the state’s three senatorial districts.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony at Government House in Lokoja, Governor Ododo described the project as a significant stride in fulfilling his pledge to bring power to underserved communities and boost grassroots development.

“It is with immense pride and a deep sense of responsibility that I inaugurate the first phase of this project, delivering 30 transformers strategically across our three senatorial zones,” the governor stated.

He explained that the project responds directly to requests submitted by communities via the Ministry of Rural and Energy Development. Every request, he said, was treated as a priority, in line with his administration’s people-first agenda.

Governor Ododo stressed that the distribution would be carried out equitably, ensuring no part of the state is left behind. “In the spirit of fairness and balance, these transformers will be allocated across all three senatorial districts, ensuring equal access to this vital infrastructure,” he said.

He highlighted that the electrification project goes beyond providing power—it’s about investing in the state’s broader socio-economic fabric. “Electricity is critical to our push for industrial growth, rural development, and improved quality of life. It powers schools, health centres, businesses, and enhances security,” he added.

The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering projects that have direct, tangible impacts on citizens, promising that subsequent phases of the electrification drive would reach even more communities.

He urged residents to take ownership of the transformers, protect them from vandalism, and use the infrastructure responsibly for the collective good.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Rural and Energy Development, Engr. Abdulmutalib Mohammed, said the initiative aligns with the ministry’s mandate to uplift rural communities through improved infrastructure. He noted that a thorough technical assessment was carried out before selecting beneficiary communities, and assured that more areas would benefit in future phases.

He commended the governor’s swift action in addressing long-standing power challenges faced by rural residents, adding that the project would significantly enhance daily life and local economic activity.
